About unionlearn
Unionlearn is here to help unions spread the lifelong learning message to even more members.
Our Mission
"Unionlearn will provide a strong and
supportive framework for unions to
maximise their members life chances by
providing access to high quality learning
and by strengthening the union voice
at work through the effective training of
representatives and professional officers."
Much has been achieved in the realm of trade union education and union learning over the past few years. But unions need to make a step change if they are to reach out to all the members who could benefit from study at the workplace or a local college or learning provider. That's why the TUC has established unionlearn to help unions develop and diversify their provision.
- Unionlearn aims to help unions to become learning organisations, with programmes for union reps and regional officers and strategic support for national officers.
- It will also help unions to broker learning opportunities for their members, running phone and online advice services, securing the best courses to meet learners' needs and kitemarking union academy provision to a quality standard.
- Finally, unionlearn will research union priorities on learning and skills, identify and share good practice, promote learning agreements, support union members on learning and skills bodies, and help shape sector skills agreements.

Leading Newcastle trade unionist gets MBE for services to lifelong learning and trade unions in the North East
Bernard McGill, unionlearn Regional Manager, has been awarded an MBE in the the Queen's Birthday Honours List (13th June, 2009) for services to lifelong learning and to trade unions in the North East. Newcastle-based Bernard joined the TUC in 1999, with a brief to develop a network of union learning representatives in the region. Starting from scratch, he has been successful in working with trade unions and employers in the region to build up a cohort of almost 4,000 union learning reps across the North East. This network, supported by unionlearn, the TUC's learning and skills organisation, has helped tens of thousands of learners in workplaces such as Newcastle City Council, Cummins, Darlington, and Royal Mail in Middlesborough.
