unionlearn Quality Award
By 2010 we expect over 250,000 learners to progress through the union route each year. In order to continually promote high quality, flexible learning opportunities, we will work closely with providers in the learning world. The unionlearn Quality Award will be awarded to providers who are committed to working with trade unions and can demonstrate that unions and union learners are considered in the design, development and delivery of courses and programmes. To gain the unionlearn Quality Award, providers must have a robust process for working with unions. The Award will be easily recognised by growing numbers of ULRs and union learners as a mark of good practice. Providers achieving the Award for their courses and programmes will also be publicised on our website. John Hayes, skills minister, presents Quality Awards
Speaking at Learning 4 Life, unionlearn's annual conference in London, John Hayes, minister for further education, skills and lifelong learning paid tribute to the contribution of unions and their partners to raising skills in the workplace. Presenting the awards with Brendan Barber, TUC general secretary, he said: “These quality awards provide a clear signpost to both learners and employers of where they can find good learning. And that's why I'm so pleased to be here and to have this chance to offer my congratulations in person to this year's award-winners.”

New award for careers information and advice
Unionlearn is introducing a new version of the Quality Award for careers information and advice. The new award will be available to all national, regional and local services with a robust process for working with unions, and who can meet the assessment criteria. Providers achieving the award for their services will be publicised on the unionlearn website.

Top author Catrin Collier presents two Isle of Wight training and learning providers with prestigious TUC unionlearn Quality Awards
Prison Officers' Union Albany learning centre on the Isle of Wight, and HTP, a leading training provider in the south of England, who provides training at Ryde fire station, received prestigious unionlearn Quality Awards from the bestselling author, Catrin Collier, who wrote the acclaimed “Hearts of Gold” series of books, today (Monday 8 December). Aidy Wellock, Prison Officers' Association Learning Centre Support Worker, and Paul Fletcher, Fire Brigades' Union Regional Education Coordinator, received the award on behalf of the Albany Learning Centre for its ITQ and Skills for Life Programmes. And Vicki Bonnett, HTP Training Director and Paul Fletcher, Fire Brigades Union Regional Coordinator, received the award on behalf of HTP for its Future Leaders, incorporating Skills for Life Programme.

The College of North East London in Tottenham received the prestigious unionlearn Quality Award from the bestselling author, Catrin Collier, who wrote the acclaimed “Hearts of Gold” series of books, today (Monday 8 December). Susan Neal, Assistant Director Employer Training Solutions, College of North East London, and Sonia Scully, of Civil Service union PCS's Victoria Learning Centre received the award on behalf of the College for its ICT and Skills for Life course programmes.
