unionlearn Quality Award

Over 20,000 union learning representatives (ULRs) across the country are promoting training and learning in the workplace on behalf of union members. The unionlearn* Quality Award* will be awarded to programmes and courses that meet our good practice criteria and will help signpost ULRs to providers that are working successfully and flexibly with unions.

By 2010 we expect over 250,000 learners to progress through the union route each year. In order to continually promote high quality, flexible learning opportunities, we will work closely with providers in the learning world. The unionlearn Quality Award will be awarded to providers who are committed to working with trade unions and can demonstrate that unions and union learners are considered in the design, development and delivery of courses and programmes.

Benefits for providers

Achieving the unionlearn Quality Award will:

• demonstrate that you meet our standards
• enable you to reach more learners
• recognise good practice for working with unions
• signpost union learning representatives to your provision
• showcase your programmes and courses on our website

To gain the unionlearn Quality Award, providers must have a robust process for working with unions. The Award will be easily recognised by growing numbers of ULRs and union learners as a mark of good practice. Providers achieving the Award for their courses and programmes will also be publicised on our website.

Achieving the unionlearn Quality Award will:

• be an incentive for providers to work with unions and to reach more learners
• provide a standard for working with unions and union learners
• signpost ULRs to union-friendly provision
• increase union leverage and influence with providers
• help unions obtain high quality data about their learners from providers

Award for careers information and advice

This award is available to all national, regional and local services with a robust process for working with unions, and who can meet the assessment criteria. Providers achieving the award for their services will be publicised on the unionlearn website.

The new Quality Award will mean that careers information and advice services that achieve the standard have shown that their service is:

• accessible to working people
• flexible and adaptable to the needs of union members
• delivered by trained and experienced staff who have an understanding of workplaces and of unions
• based on consultation with unions and in line with their aims and values
• impartial and confidential, with strong equality and diversity policies
• part of a quality assured network for signposting and referral
• representative of best practice and endorsed by appropriate assessors and inspectors.

Organisations achieving the new Quality Award, include the unionlearn learning and careers advice service, nextstep providers, college services, SSCs* and unions who are delivering an information and advice service to members. As more providers receive the award, ULRs will be able to identify union-friendly services.

Achieving the unionlearn Quality Award will:

• help unions obtain high quality data about their learners from providers.

Four simple steps to achieving the unionlearn Quality Award

There are four stages to achieving the award. A unionlearn Assessor will guide you through the process:

1. Commitment: apply to unionlearn using the online application form
2. Development: agree an Action Plan and gather evidence
3. Assessment: match evidence to the standards
4. Accreditation: achieve national recognition for your work with unions and union leaders The unionlearn Quality Award will be given for three years and will be reviewed annually. There is no fee involved. Providers must work with a unionlearn assessor to demonstrate good practice and continuous improvement.
