Stream: Learning through unions

Midlands increases union learning representatives by almost thirteen per cent

Commenting on the increase in union learning reps (ULR) in the Midlands, regional unionlearn* manager Mary Alys said: 'Over the last year, the number of union learning reps throughout the Midlands has increased by almost thirteen per cent, which is great news for those seeking to improve their skills in the region. Union learning reps play a key role in encouraging their workmates to take courses and improve their lives, their job prospects and their skills. Unionlearn in the Midlands is proud to work with trade unions to enable their members to return to learning.'

Brendan Barber announced new figures of over 20,000 ULRs nationally (an increase of almost 15%), who helped over 206,000 (an increase of over one third) people back into education at the unionlearn conference in Central London today. Also attending were Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills, John Denham MP, Lenny Henry, and crime writer Val McDermid. John Denham MP also announced a new consultation on the right to request training called Time to Train.
