Secretary of State presents prestigious TUC unionlearn Quality Award to City College Norwich

City College NorwichCity College Norwich TUC Education Unit received a prestigious unionlearn* Quality Award* from the Right Honourable Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills, John Denham MP, today (Wednesday 18 June). Geoff Sorrell, Deputy Principal Academic Affairs, Mark Hughes, Trade Union Studies Coordinator, and Lisa Bowler, Trade Union Studies Project Worker received the award on behalf of the College for Trade Union Studies and their learndirect* Digital Divide Project. City College is also part of U-Net, the unionlearn network, launched by David Lammy MP, Minister of Skills, in central London last month.

City College Norwich TUC Education Unit is one of 45 education providers which have received the unionlearn Quality Award since it was launched in June last year. The College works closely with union learning reps (ULRs) in and around Norwich, who are part of a network of over 20,000 ULRs across the country.

The unionlearn Quality Award is awarded to providers in the learning world who are committed to working with trade unions. Awards are made to providers who demonstrate that unions and union learners are considered in the design, development and delivery of courses and programmes. Providers achieving the unionlearn Quality Award will be included on the unionlearn website which receives over one and a half million hits per month.

John Denham MP, Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills said: 'I am delighted to present the unionlearn Quality Award to City College Norwich TUC Education Unit in recognition of its work providing learning opportunities for trade unions and their members. City College is playing an important role in raising skills levels in Norwich and through that is helping individuals to develop their full potential, which can also benefit their families, their communities and their employers.'

Geoff Sorrell, Deputy Principal Academic Affairs said: ' City College Norwich is proud and delighted to receive recognition for the success its Trade Union Studies Centre has achieved through the Digital Divide project. By working with union learning representatives, we have been able to attract more union learners to take their first steps in learning for many years which has in turn led to further study. We look forward to making this happen for even more learners over the next few years. This is what Digital Divide is all about.'

Barry Francis, Regional Manager, unionlearn with the Southern and Eastern Region TUC said: 'I am delighted to see City College Norwich win the unionlearn Quality Award. It reflects all the hard work by staff and learners and the great partnership between the College and trade unions. Partners like City College are crucial to enabling workers in and around Norwich to improve their lives and those of their families through learning.'
