Secretary of State presents prestigious TUC unionlearn Quality Award to Communications Workers Union (CWU) Learning Centre at Pudsey
The Charlie Elliot Learning Centre is one of 45 education providers which have received the unionlearn Quality Award since it was launched in June last year. The Centre works closely with union learning reps (ULRs) in and around Pudsey, who are part of a network of over 20,000 ULRs across the country. The unionlearn Quality Award is awarded to providers in the learning world who are committed to working with trade unions. Awards are made to providers who demonstrate that unions and union learners are considered in the design, development and delivery of courses and programmes. Providers achieving the unionlearn Quality Award will be included on the unionlearn website which receives over one and a half million hits per month. John Denham MP, Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills said: 'I am delighted to present the unionlearn Quality Award to the Charlie Elliot Learning Centre in recognition of its work providing learning opportunities for trade unions and their members. The Centre is playing an important role in raising skills levels in the Pudsey area and through that is helping individuals to develop their full potential, which can also benefit their families, their communities and their employers.' Trish Vollans , Lead CWU ULR said: ' All of us at the Charlie Elliott Learning Centre feel privileged to receive this award. It is evidence that learning via the union path is successful in raising skills levels for both the young and the more mature. Through offering learning opportunities to those, who otherwise would not have had that opportunity, we are aiming towards a more equal society.' Dr Alan Roe, Regional Manager, unionlearn with Yorkshire and the Humber TUC said: 'I am delighted that the Charlie Elliot Learning Centre has received the unionlearn Quality Award. It's a tribute to Trish and all the staff there and highlights work with a section of society that learning organisations often forget - those who have retired. Partners like this centre are crucial to enabling workers in and around Pudsey to improve their lives and those of their families through learning.'
