Triple Gold for union learning projects in the North West
Three union learning projects supported by unionlearn* (the TUC's learning and skills organisation) struck gold in the 2008 North West regional learndirect* * Achievement Awards on 18th June. Merseytravel scooped the Company Award and one of their employees, Suzanne Politi, won the unionlearn Award. The Skills at Work Award was won by Chris Taylor at Tyco - a link centre supported through Stockport Trade Union learning centre. In addition, trade unions were also represented by finalists Terry Miles and Terry Griffin of Vauxhall Motors and the Trade Union Learning Centre* at Stockport College. The Awards were held at the Lowry Centre in Salford, and were set up to recognise and celebrate the achievements of learners, employers, and learndirect centres supporting them. Since last year's national award ceremony in October, over 180,000 people have taken a learndirect course. Unionlearn Award winner Suzanne Politi said: 'I was thrilled to have been nominated and invited to the awards. When my name was called out as a winner, I was speechless. My own experience has shown me the value of lifelong learning, Merseytravel and unionlearn have given me the ability to help others re-enter learning and gain essential skills for work and life.' Dave Eva, unionlearn Regional Manager said: 'It's great to be part of the learndirect awards and having three winners linked to union learning as well as two finalists underlines the crucial contribution unions are making to improving learning in the workplace. Unionlearn congratulates each and every winner and finalist.'
