John Denham debates the right to request time for training at TUC Congress

Representatives of unions, employers and the Government were in general agreement about the proposed new right to request time for training at a packed fringe meeting at the TUC Congress in Brighton yesterday (Tuesday 9 September).

A high level panel of speakers including CBI Deputy Director General, John Cridland; Chair of unionlearn's board, and CWU General Secretary, Billy Hayes; DIUS* Secretary of State, John Denham; and TUC Deputy General Secretary, Frances O'Grady, addressed participants.

The meeting took place just minutes after John Denham had addressed the full Congress. Mr Denham's speech was well received by delegates who warmly applauded his announcement that the Government was proposing to increase the minimum pay rate for apprentices, and his supportive references to the work of union learning reps and unionlearn*.
