Father Christmas joins the CWU!The idea of a Secret Santa to buy gifts for colleagues has been rising in recent years as a great way to help ensure the spirit of Christmas is not entirely lost from the UK's factories, shops and offices. But the CWU have taken this festive cheer to new heights, running a Secret Santa for the benefit of local disadvantaged children. Lead ULR Nigel Backhouse and Royal Mail Manager Lea Pedley have this year been running Barnardo's Secret Santa in partnership with the SPACE Learning Centre and the Mail Centre in Bradford. Local children in care homes are benefitting from the CWU and Royal Mail working together for a greater good. The idea began through a local contact with n Bernardo's who supplied the SPACE Centre with a list of names of children in care homes within the local area ranging from 3 months up to 17 years old. The idea was that they could put up a tree in the Bradford Mail Centre with gift tags on it with the children's names, ages, and genders. Members of staff were then encouraged to take a tag and buy an appropriate present for the child and then bring it back wrapped and drop it off in the collection point. 'The response was fantastic from the Management and staff within the Mail Centre', says Nigel, 'and we managed to provide 135 gifts all for children in care homes within the local area as well as raising £250 from selling green pin badges and a raffle. 'The event has brought the spirit of Christmas into the work place as well as helping us in raising the awareness and the profile of the Learning Centre. The event has been that well supported that we are now planning on making it an annual event.' Donations can be given via the link below: http://www.barnardos.org.uk/donate.htm Donate by post Your donation will ensure that we provide the necessary help to children affected by poverty, abuse and disability. It can help transform the lives of children in need. Please send us your gift by cheque made payable to Barnardo's, mailed to the following address: Barnardo's Briefing document (1,100 words) issued 17 Dec 2009 |
