Stream: Learning through unions

Union members can now climb a workplace learning framework

An innovative new electronic framework for learning, the unionlearn* Climbing Frame*, is today (Wednesday 12th September) being launched at TUC Congress at Brighton. The unionlearn Climbing Frame will help learners to map out their learning pathways, it will allow workplace Union Learning Reps to track their members' progress, and can be aligned to support employers' development programmes.

The unionlearn Climbing Frame is a one-stop-shop of learning and skills resources. And it can be used in a variety of ways. Learners can produce individual learning plans. Employers can use it to identify training needs and support workplace development. And trade unions can use it to disseminate information about trade union education programmes and initiatives.

A pilot programme saw unionlearn develop Climbing Frames with unions including retail union USDAW, civil service union PCS, and professionals union Prospect. These unions created a bespoke approach to suit their members. The system provides up-to-date information and advice for its users about a broad range of learning opportunities and complements a range of tools, materials and the unionlearn Careers and Advice Line launched at Congress on Monday.

Launching the unionlearn Climbing Frame, Liz Smith, unionlearn director said: 'Unionlearn is working hard to develop tools such as the Climbing Frame that are designed to meet the needs of trade union members, but can also encompass employers' training needs. This new and innovative framework for learning will benefit all those involved in union learning in the workplace.'
