Donna has also completed a number of courses in her free time so she can empathise with her students and give them the best learning experience possible.

On winning the award Donna commented:

'learndirect is really flexible and learners really enjoy it. It fits in with their other commitments, which is great. I'm now managing the centre and we want to take learndirect out to the community, to promote this way of learning.'

Brian Lynch, responsible for the branch where Donna works added:

'Donna has got fantastic vision and focus. She cares about her learners and works really, really hard.'

Suzanne Politi, from Wirral, scooped the North West unionlearn award.

Norman Hunter, Suzanne Politi and Graham Whitehead Suzanne is a team leader at Merseytravel's Spaceport attraction in Liverpool and became a unionlearn representative after benefiting from learndirect training herself. Donna Bilyard Fellow Newcastle TUC union rep, Natalie Wood was also Highly Commended in the category.

On receiving her award, Jacqui commented:

'I'm amazed! I didn't have any skills at all, and now I've passed a number of qualifications. If I can do it anyone can. I couldn't have done it without my husband - He pushed me and kept me going. And I have a lot of support from my friends. In the past my confidence has been really low and learndirect has made me the person I am today.'

Natalie Wood, has recently become a Union Learning Rep at Newcastle Council and within the last 8 months has promoted learndirect amongst Union members, encouraging a number of learners to take up learndirect courses at the centre.

Winners Donna, Suzanne and Jacqui will now go on to represent their regions at the National learndirect Achievement Award ceremony, which is to take place at The Science Museum in London on 20 October.

Liz Smith, Director of unionlearn, sponsor of the award, said:

'Unionlearn is delighted to have sponsored its own award, and are pleased that the calibre of nominees has been so very high. The winners fully deserve their recognition, and to be rewarded for their success in promoting learndirect and proving the benefits from union-led learning.'

Dereth Wood, Ufi* Operations Director said:

'The regional unionlearn winners have demonstrated an inspirational commitment to developing their own and their colleagues' skills and qualifications. As a great encouragement to Union Representatives across England, they truly deserve recognition.'
