High Hopes for Higher SkillsThe regional Higher Skills project in partnership with the North East Higher Skills Network (NEHSN) is expanding at a rapid pace with over 80 trade union members from the north east Learning for All Fund projects progressing on to higher level qualifications. Unionlearn in the region is working with many learning providers to offer a range of higher skills, including Diplomas, Foundation Degrees*, BA Honours and Masters degrees. The latest initiative to help raise demand is to offer a 20 credit introduction to the Leadership & Management online course for trade union members and activists , in partnership with City Of Sunderland College and the Digital Divide. The College has made 60 places available and unionlearn's higher skills project workers are currently disseminating this information to many workplace projects and expect to fill 30 places. The course lasts 12 weeks and each learner will be loaned a hand held computer to help them complete their portfolio. The end result will hopefully offer the learners a smooth progression onto a foundation degree. Newcastle College TU Education Centre have also started a Leadership & Management foundation Degree for trade union activists which already has 11 learners enrolled. They have also started the diploma for employment law with a further 12 union members enrolled on that course, and with City of Sunderland in the process of developing a FD on Health & Safety for TU reps it clearly demonstrates not only an appetite for progression and higher level qualifications , but a willingness and recognition of providers to work with unionlearn* to raise skill levels across the region. If you are interested in any of these courses or would like any information about higher skills or the higher skills project in general, please co ntact Ken Gyles on 07876746867/ kgyles@tuc.org.uk or Julie Robinson on jrobinson@tuc.org.uk
