Bishop Auckland MP learns the value of Union Learning Reps

Helen Goodman, MP for Bishop Auckland has today (Friday) presented over a dozen Union Learning Representatives (ULRS) with letters of congratulation for completing their Level 3 and 4 information, advice and guidance (IAG) qualifications at Bishop Auckland College.

Ms Goodman was joined at the college site by Head of Faculty for Adult and HE* Development, Louise Kemp and Barney McGill, Regional Manager for unionlearn* (the TUC's learning and skills organisation) who funded the higher level qualifications through a pilot project in the region. She will hear firsthand how trade unions, employers and learning providers like Bishop Auckland College are working in partnership to ensure workers in her constituency, and the whole of the region can have the opportunity to improve their skills, supported by learning professionals.

Unionlearn secured Learning and Skills Council (LSC) and Equal* funding to run a programme aiming to increase IAG* capacity amongst ULRs in the region so that they could offer expert level information on learning and work to their fellow members and colleagues within workplaces. All in all the project saw 100 ULRs trained to either Level 3 or 4 and in conjunction 15 union-led learning centres achieve the matrix Standard - a national quality standard for providing professional IAG to the learners who use them.

Head of Faculty for Adult and HE Development, Louise Kemp said, 'The College has provided Advice and Guidance courses at levels 2, 3 and 4 since 1998 and has developed a very good reputation for the quality of delivery across the northern region and continues to meet the demand for these qualifications from a wide range of employers offering guidance services. The College wishes to see this excellent partnership continue to flourish and looks forward to working with unionlearn in the future.'

Barney McGill, unionlearn regional manager said: 'I hope Helen is as impressed with the achievements of both the college and the ULRs as I am - the pilot project has been a massive success, so much so that we are able to run the same programme again over the next year for a further 150 ULRs across the north east. We strive to make our region a region for learning and these qualifications, along with the dedication of the people who complete them in order to help others, are a fantastic step to achieving that.'

Helen Goodman, MP for Bishop Auckland said: ' I am delighted to be able to attend the TUC unionlearn presentation at Bishop Auckland College.

'Lifelong learning and work-based education are increasingly important, and through their excellent unionlearn programme, the TUC have had real success in equipping local people with new skills and qualifications'.
