Positive messages from Get On North WestThe North West Employers Organisation (NWEO) is working closely with the trade union movement to ensure the Get On (GO) Awards actually mean life long learning and progression is available to all staff in local authorities and related sectors. At the recent launch event a number of positive messages emerged. For the unions in order to gain the award the organisation must demonstrate the involvement of ULRs. Merseytravel's Senior trade union rep, Roger Irvine and the Chief Executive, Neil Scales signed a joint agreement to work towards the award and both spoke passionately about the benefits of engaging on the Life Long Learning agenda. A key element of this work was the vital role Union Learning Reps have in engaging the workforce in a way an employer cannot. Two concrete examples of how the unions and employers have benefited were given. The first was it has been a number of years since both sides have had any disciplinary cases. From the employer's side Neil said that on average each employee takes two days less sickness leave each year. Both examples are very powerful reasons for unions and employers to become involved. Lead ULR*, Floss Mitchell and Les Tickner, Head of Environmental Services at Carlisle Council had similar tales to tell. Workshops were held on the role of ULRs, working with providers and how to use the Move On Up approach to engage the whole organisation. Other speakers included NWEO Director of Capacity and Learning, Liz McQue, Judith Swift, Union Development Manager, unionlearn*, and Anne Gornall, Director, Regional Skills Team LSC* North West. Keynote speaker, Baroness Wall of New Barnet outlined the National Skills Agenda and sent a clear message of the government's support for the work in our region. Commenting on the event Beryl Mulroy, GMB ULR, Tameside MBC emailed to say ' The meeting yesterday was very informative and truly inspirational not to mention well organised.'
