Unison breaking new ground in the Learning and Skills area

UNISON the public sector union is once again breaking new ground in the Learning and Skills area. UNISON has been developing, promoting and delivering skills based courses to public sector workers over many years.

One of their recent collaborations is reaching agreement with Waltham Forest Council in North East London to work in partnership with them in the delivery of a range of skills based training courses. In the Councils Social Services department they are offering courses that will support care workers who are moving on to take their NVQ* in care.

UNISON also provides ESOL* courses for speakers of other languages .We are at present in discussions with the department about promoting UNISON's social care programme which includes the workplace delivered Degree in Social Work. UNISON believes that this type of training programme offers many public sector workers a unique opportunity of career progression which has previously been denied to front line workers.

UNISON negotiates with employers to obtain paid release to attend these courses and works closely with employees to identify their issues through their local union learner reps. Julia Poynter, UNISON's locally based union learner co-ordinator said

"We are committed to working with the Council in providing quality training opportunities to all Council employees . This can provide real career progression opportunities for staff. The work we are currently doing in the Social Services department will raise skill levels and improve service delivery. Hopefully it will also be repeated in all other departments."

This is a very important programme which is expected to run for many years and welcomes the commitment from the Council to work with UNISON in which all benefit.
