Fire fighters in Gloucestershire are to sign a learning agreement with their employers. In the run up to Adult Learners Week (May 19 - 24), officials from the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) will on May 15 meet senior managers from Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service (GFRS) at Gloucester Community Fire & Rescue Station to sign a Learning Partnership Forum Agreement. Station Manager Bev Booth, who is the lead coordinator for GFRS, states: 'The learning agreement is another avenue where GFRS and the FBU can work in partnership to develop a culture of lifelong learning in the workplace. 'Everyone benefits - staff gain new skills, confidence and the enthusiasm to continue learning throughout their career, realising their own potential and opening up opportunities, and the organisation retains staff who are more motivated, have a wider range of skills, and are able to contribute more to the successful running of the service.' Mike Tully, FBU official for GFRS who will be signing the agreement, was equally enthusiastic, and adds: "It endorses and widens the field for learners and helps employees to achieve their potential at work. 'The primary aims are to promote education and lifelong learning within the FBU and trade union movement, remove barriers and constraints to encourage employers to meet the learning needs of its employees and to represent at all levels on issues affecting training and development. 'The above is reflected in the FBU rule book stating our immediate aim is to serve the community by encouraging our members to be skilled at their craft". Helen Cole, unionlearn* regional manager, welcomed the news, saying: 'Managers are showing their commitment to their staff by signing up to this agreement. They are doing what they can to bring the benefits of skills and learning to their workforce.' ends Notes to editors: For further information contact Helen Cole on 07887 797 149.
