Vytautas Amponsem does not believe in glass ceilings, a philosophy that has enabled him to return to education to help him achieve his goal of becoming a nurse.
It was UNISON’s Return to Learn courses that gave him the confidence to study for an Open University degree in nursing.
Vytautas a former miner and instructor in underground equipment, left Ghana 14 years ago hoping to work in mining or construction in the UK. Unfortunately, he arrived as the recession that severely impacted the construction industry took hold. He quickly realised that his other area of expertise, the mining industry, had been decimated with the closure of most of the UK’s coal mines. Added to this he found the qualifications he had from Ghana were not recognised in the UK.
Needing to support his family he took on agency work before becoming a carer. He progressed to the role of senior carer and then a trainer in manual handling and health and safety. When the opportunity arose to move to working for the NHS he took it, along with the chance to move to different areas to improve his knowledge.
It was at this point he saw a UNISON leaflet advertising their Return to Learn courses. Having been out of education for many years, he found the courses a great way to build his confidence to get back into learning.
It was a calm environment with no pressure and a very informal model of teaching. You learnt in a fun way, and it was very relaxed...not at all like school!’’
The course enabled him to progress onto his functional skills, then GCSE Maths and English at Sheffield College. Bridging the gap between his GCSE’s and University, he went on to successfully complete his Health Science Profession Access qualification.
Initially funded by the Trust, the rules changed in 2018 and Vytautas had to fund himself in order to continue with his ambition to become a nurse. It seems a career as a medical professional is in his blood. His father is a doctor, and he was always encouraged to pursue the sciences, something that has stood him in good stead in his chosen career path.
Whilst continuing to work as a clinical support worker at a Sheffield Hospital, Vytautas has been studying for his Open University Nursing degree. He is now in his final year of the four-year course. Hoping to graduate in September, he is currently working on his dissertation.
He recognises that with a young family and a full-time job, it can be challenging to also have an academic life, but he is quite determined to achieve his goal and knows that he is setting a good example to his children.
Asked what motivates him, Vytautas added,
I aspire for excellence when I’m given a challenge. I like to rise to it and to do things properly. Some friends and colleagues think I’m barmy, I seemed to be going in the opposite direction to the stampede rushing away from education.
At 52, Vytautas is proof that you can go back into education or change your career path at any time of your life.
