Hard work pays off

Warrington Borough Council Union Learning Centre

Dave Onions: Unite (T&G section) member - 56 years old with over 20 years service within Warrington Borough Council and left school with no qualifications.

Denis Ashton, Marie Qazzaz and David Onions My learning journey started one day I was sitting in the canteen having a cup of tea, looking over at these computers that where sitting on desks, I thought, 'well, so this is a learning centre'. Then Denis came over to me, and asked whether I wanted to have a go, yes I thought, why not, bearing in mind I had never switched on a computer before, let alone operate one. I found it hard to grasp at first, then it was like someone pinched me, and I woke up. It's great now, feel a lot more confident. I have completed Intro to Computers, First Aid, Spanish, Local History, Digital Photography and an English course.

What have you gained?

Since doing my computer course, I have gained a lot more knowledge, so much that I have one of my own now that I use in the house. I have gained the skills to operate a computer and my First Aid knowledge has improved. Doing the Local History courses has given me another insight to my community, I found out so much more about Warrington and our local history. It really opens your eyes.

I would have never attempted these courses but for Denis and Marie, whose dedication has brought a lot of employees back into learning.

Denis Ashton Centre Coordinator

This is a great achievement, the centre has given an opportunity for members to engage with ieducation. I would like to thank the partnership of Warrington Borough Council, the GMB, unionlearn* and Warrington Collegiate for all their hard work, but most of all to Marie Qazzaz, unionlearn project worker, for all her hard work and determination, which has got us to where we are today.
