Karl's Bit

As many of you will be aware U-Net learning centres will be starting to deliver learning, accessing Train to Gain funding for delivery. Unionlearn has negotiated a Train to Gain contract with Ufi* which represents a fantastic opportunity for us to develop new strands of learning within our centres.

Obviously there are bound to be some concerns from centres about how they can best utilise the opportunities our involvement with Train to Gain present.

Regional Support workers will be working closely with centres to help them compile action plans which will enable them to fully utilise this funding stream and develop innovative approaches to learning delivery in their centre as well as increasing provision.

It's vital that the learning centre network embraces this new challenge and that we work to preserve the funds needed to support union learners. Train to Gain provision is set to increase within the FE* sector year on year and our involvement ensures that the network and individual centres are best placed to continue to play an important part of the FE landscape for union learners.

As I mentioned earlier the Regional Support Workers are on hand to provide support and the U-Net national team are also on hand to provide guidance and any assistance you may need.

We are currently compiling a guidance document that will be circulated to all centres in the near future. Pending the launch of the guidance document, additional information and guidance on Train to Gain is also available on the unionlearn* website or by contacting the unionlearn team in your region.

As part of International Literacy Day on 8th September and National Poetry Day on 9th October we launched our own U-Net short story/poetry writing competition. Please encourage your learners to take part in this profile-raising competition. All applicants will receive a certificate for taking part and the winning story will be published on our website.

The U-Net Partners' meeting will take place on 12th and 13th November with the location yet to be confirmed. Further information will follow shortly.

New Learner Feedback Cards

image
Learndirect has redesigned learner feedback cards to increase the space available for comments. These are now available to order along with a card holder.

There is also a new poster which promotes all the ways in which learners can provide feedback about learndirect*, for example:

  • Completing a 'Tell us what you think' feedback card
  • Using the 'Tell us what you think' form on the learndirect website
  • Calling Learner Support on 0800 101 901
  • Writing to us
  • Taking part in our online Learner Satisfaction survey

So the next time you are placing an order for branded materials add them to your list.

U-Net Short Story/Poetry Competition

Closing date: 2nd October

writing competition prizes

We would like all learning centre managers and staff to encourage learners to participate. Your short story should be no longer than 1000 words.

Winners will be announced on National Poetry Day, 9th October. The winner will be awarded the prize and certificate at their U-Net centre. All prize winners will have their stories published on the unionlearn website.

  • Log onto the U-Net website to look for ideas to get learners involved
  • Send an email template around to all current learners through the learndirect system, which invites them to look at the competition webpage.
  • Consider running a story/poetry writing workshop within the learning centre or workplace.
  • Speak to your centre's Skills for Life* tutor, who may have ideas of their own to ways in which you can raise participation.

Please remember that the best tool for getting the word out about marketing and events are union learning reps, who have connections to the learning centre.

Please print off and use the PDF poster from our website. Competitions can be a very good way of recruiting new learners.

All details and materials can be found on the U-Net website: www.unionlearn.org.uk/qrcompetition

If you have any queries regarding the competition, please do not hesitate to contact the U-Net office 0191 2275568.

Skills for Life Resource - Films of Effective Practice

QIA Skills for Life Improvement Programme has created a new set of three films that demonstrate ways in which Skills for Life is taught in three different contexts. The films focus is on how literacy, language and numeracy (LLN) skills can be developed alongside vocational or other subject areas and therefore in a context of direct interest and relevance to the learners.

The three films will be of particular interest to teacher trainers as they provide a rich resource for promoting discussion and reflection on effective teaching. They will also be of interest to staff teams or individuals, whether they are LLN specialists or vocational teachers who have a similar interest in developing their own skills and knowledge.
