Cumbria 'nets' itself a full agenda

Unionlearn and the Northern TUC will be out in force in Cumbria on Monday 13th October as they host a joint full day event at the University of Cumbria, Newton Rigg, Penrith Campus. One of the main items on a packed agenda will see the 65 attendees being invited to celebrate the regional launch of U-Net (unionlearn Network of Learning Centres with a strong relationship with learndirect*).

U-Net is comprised of 33 'medium' learning centres that support up to 5 linked learning centres. U-Net offers union members, family and friends quality provision of flexible learning and the opportunity to gain qualifications in a relaxed atmosphere, with many staff who are qualified Union Learning Reps and understand the personal and professional issues which face adult learners.

Three of the 33 U-Net centres are in Cumbria, based at British Nuclear Group Ltd, Pirelli, and McVities - all of whom are doing excellent work getting adults back into learning and gaining recognised qualifications, with the most popular being the National Tests in literacy and numeracy as well as accredited ICT* learning.

Barney McGill, unionlearn regional manager said: 'Improved skills are imperative in the ever-changing world of work, for both the individuals and the organisations who employ them, as well as the regional economy as a whole. Many of the employers who work with their unions and U-Net reap the benefits of the centres every bit as much as the learners.

'Our network of Union Learning Reps across the region do an invaluable job of helping adults get back into learning, and U-Net is a fantastic and effective tool to help them deliver a top-quality service that is flexible, accessible and delivers tangible results. The U-Net learning centres at BNG, Pirelli and McVities have become an integral part of their respective workplaces for the learners and employers alike.'

Judith Swift, unionlearn Union Development Manager, who is responsible for U-Net throughout the country said: 'The Northern region of unionlearn* are playing a leading role in bridging the Digital Divide for many workplace learners through supporting union partnerships with employers, learndirect and providers. Learning centres with active union and ULR* support bring quality asssured learning to busy working people who could not access learning in any other way.

'It is fantastic to see those with the most barriers to learning - low confidence, shift and part ime workers, those with caring responsibilities and many others - transform their lives and unlock their potential through their union.'
