Nick Raynsford MP visits Trade Union Education Study Centre at Woolwich

Greenwich MP Nick Raynsford will see how his constituents are benefiting from union-led learning during a visit to TUC Study Centre, Woolwich (Friday 12 June). The MP will be taken on a tour of the learning centre and meet union learning reps (ULRs) from Unite, the GMB and UNISON, as well as learners from the Council. His constituents were keen to tell him about how they had improved their skills through a number of courses through learndirect*.

The Centre's 'Celebration of Learning' will take place between 11am and 4pm and is being held to promote the relocation of the centre from Peggy Middleton House to Civic House. The Centre is open to all Council Staff, trade union members and their families and provides training in Literacy, Numeracy, IT and NVQs* in Customer Services.

Guest speakers will include the Right Honourable Nick Raynsford MP, Cllr Peter Brooks, Deputy Leader of the Council, Barry Francis, unionlearn* Regional Manager and activities will include blood pressure checks, healthy living sessions, course previews and information, and competitions. Unionlearn, the TUC's learning and skills organisation, has supported the centre with funding from the Union Learning fund (ULF).

Nick Raynsford MP said: 'I am delighted to see how successful the partnership between trade unions and Greenwich Council is and how many employees in the Borough have benefited from learning new skills and re-engaging with learning.'

Barry Francis, unionlearn Regional Manager, said: 'The partnership between Greenwich Council, Woolwich College and trade unions, has created a real culture of learning for hundreds of staff throughout the Borough. Through our network of union learning reps, workers throughout the region are taking up courses, improving their skills and making real progress. The Union Learning Fund* (ULF), administered by unionlearn, is making hundreds of projects like this possible across the country.'
