Over 600 Bradford Royal Mail staff set to benefit as union learning rockets at SPACE centreOver 600 Royal Mail staff at in Bradford will be better able to improve their skills as the SPACE learning centre launches a Digital Divide project with the Communication Workers Union (CWU) and unionlearn, the TUC's learning and skills organisation (Thursday 18th June). This project will support online learning as the centre becomes part of the TUC's U-Net network of trade union learning centres. The Digital Divide project will enable CWU members and their families who live and work in remote areas to access learning. Simon Scott, Mail Centre Manager, Royal Mail, Trish Lavelle, CWU Education Officer, and Dr Alan Roe, unionlearn regional manager will launch the new project.
The SPACE learning centre has enjoyed a lot of success, on which it hopes to build. Learners have completed basic IT courses as well as the European Computer Driving Licence. In cooperation with The Reading Agency, staff have taken the Six Book Challenge, with many picking up a book for the first time. An initiative to help people stop smoking has also been very successful. Dr Alan Roe, unionlearn regional manager said: 'The SPACE centre has been very imaginative in the kinds of courses which have been run and the help offered to staff. Working together with unionlearn, the NHS and Bradford TUC Education Unit, Royal Mail and the CWU have really worked hard to offer Bradford staff the chance to change their lives through learning.' Andy Sorton , CWU North East Project Worker said: 'The long-term aims and objectives of this Digital Divide project are to break down learning barriers that exist for people who work in smaller and often more remote workplaces within Royal Mail and BT. Through learndirect* , which offers online learning, we are able to extend the excellent work already carried out by union learning reps. One of the central components of this project is that it will provide new learning opportunities to CWU members and their families who live and work in remote areas and so break down an important barrier to learning. ' The event will take place at Bradford Royal Mail, 2 Foster Square, Bradford between 2 and 4pm.
