Unions reflect the diversity of the communities they represent. They also have responsibilities as employers. Recent test cases have shown that fairness at work is a key union issue.
Union officers and staff need an understanding of employers' legal duties in order to ensure that the union benefits all members through effective representation, structures and policies.

| Who is this for |
All union officers and staff with responsibility for representation, negotiation, handling casework and organising. This course is not suitable for union representatives covering a single workplace. No prior knowledge is assumed.

| Knowledge |
This course covers essential knowledge in these areas:
* what is meant by equality, discrimination and diversity
* equality law (identifying opportunities for making sure
* it is fair and inclusive)
* using equality legislation when representing members
* discrimination and harassment cases
* negotiating policies and procedures
* equality bargaining - recognising opportunities to widen the bargaining agenda
* organising under-represented groups of workers - ensuring that the union message is inclusive for all potential members.
