This course has been developed: to raise awareness of domestic violence and its impact on members in the workplace; to assist union representatives who wish to 'break the silence' on domestic violence both within the workplace and their unions; to determine what unions and employers can do to create an environment in which those experiencing domestic violence can speak up and be supported. This is not a course to train reps to counsel members but will provide you with the information on those who can. The aims of the course are to enable union representatives: - to develop an understanding of domestic violence - to consider how it can affect members at work - to identify their role, and the roles of others, in supporting members experiencing domestic violence - to plan workplace and trade union action on domestic violence Because the vast majority of those who experience domestic violence are women, where it is necessary to be gender specific this course will refer to women. But in all workplaces it should be remembered that men can experience domestic violence and that it occurs in same-sex as well as heterosexual relationships.
