embargo: none Union and political figures call for action on LGBT rights at work

Ms Eagle, praised the work of TUC Education in publishing the book and being in the forefront of campaigning for equal rights for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people in the workplace. She was joined at the event by TUC General secretary Brendan Barber, who congratulated Angela Eagle on her consistent campaigning for workplace equality, and for working closely with the TUC to achieve some key legal changes. Liz Smith, Director of unionlearn, hosted the launch, and pointed out that thousands of union reps would be receiving the book and all courses would give some time to working on its content.
Brendan Barber, TUC general secretary said: 'Unionlearn and TUC Education is very proud of its record in promoting and developing equalities in the world of work and in unions. Through lobbying and influencing government, the TUC has had considerable influence on a range of equalities legislation over the years and we are very active in lobbying and campaigning on LGBT issues. This workbook will play a vital role in promoting understanding of LGBT issues in workplaces.' Angela Eagle MP said: 'This is a practical and useful document. The fact that Out at Work is written for all workplace reps, aiming to equip them with advice, information and reference points on LGBT issues, will be a major step forward in assisting unions to better represent LGBT members at work. This will give them the confidence and knowledge to turn policy into practice. Unionlearn with TUC Education has ambitious plans for taking the workbook out to where it can be most useful and I'm delighted to support it. This workbook will, I think, be as influential as the TUC's Working Women publication.' Today, unionlearn with TUC Education, will launch Out at Work, a new workbook detailing LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) people's rights at work and which is designed to help promote LGBT issues and equality among the UK's workforce. TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber and Angela Eagle MP will this evening highlight the important role that unionlearn with TUC Education will be playing in increasing awareness of LGBT issues among union representatives and calling for greater inclusion.
The workbook outlines a range of strategies to help union reps and others to have enough information and confidence to assist LGBT members, understand the language around LGBT issues, and be clear about negotiating for LGBT members. It also provides vital information about work/life balance, Lesbian, gay and bisexual rights at work, harassment and bullying as well as a number of useful case studies. Over 15,000 union reps will receive a copy during the summer term and will be trained in its use.
