Stream: Learning through unions

Trade Unions and the Environment

imageThe environment is everyone's concern, however trade unions are at the forefront of understanding the need to protect the environment. Trade unions have a critical role to play in changing employer attitudes and taking 'greening' the workplace seriously.

Environmental reps in the workplace are achieving energy savings and huge cost benefits for their employers. Small steps, such as recycling paper or turning off lights, can make an enormous difference. Unions and employers need to do much more to help UK businesses to clean up their act and begin to make a real change. Raising awareness and educating members will give them to give them a better understanding of environmental issues.

The course has been designed to meet the growing demand from trade union members and reps for information, knowledge and skills to deal with environmental issues. This impact has been driven by global pressures on the environment, the international response, the raising of the stakes from the UK political system and widespread recognition that the environment is a serious concern at every level of society.

The trade union movement has a strong tradition of campaigning on environmental issue, and this course continues that trend by looking at current environmental issues in the workplace.

Can I get time off to learn?

Union representatives who wish to attend TUC courses in working time should first ask their employer for time off with pay. The Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992 and the Safety Representatives and Safety Committee Regulations 1977 give accredited union and safety representatives a legal right to reasonable time off with pay to attend courses approved by the TUC or their union. Guidance towards establishing what constitutes reasonable time off can be found in the ACAS Code of Practice (http://www.acas.org.uk/publications/pdf/CP03.pdf).

Representatives who find difficulty in obtaining paid time off to attend TUC courses should seek assistance from their senior union representative or full time union officer.

Can I get time off for online courses?

Online learning* should not be seen as an alternative to paid release from work. The law still applies, whether learning takes place away from work or in work, at a workstation or in a company learning centre.

How much is the course?

This course is free for all recognised union reps from TUC member unions.
