The Revised National Occupational Standards for Union Representatives & Professional, 2007To ensure that the National Occupational Standards* (NOS) for Trades Union Voluntary Officers & Learning Representatives remain up-to-date and 'fit for purpose' for unions, representatives, officers, employers and individuals in the Workplace, ENTO, as the responsible standards body, was commissioned by the SSDA (Sector Skills Development Agency) and the UK's qualifications regulatory bodies to undertake a review of the NOS. The existing National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Trades Union Voluntary Officers & Learning Representatives had been in existence since 2001 and expired in May 2007. There was strong support for this review and the Standards have a key role to play in raising standards of practice, and awareness of those performing these functions. The NOS form the basis for VRQs and Trades Unions' qualifications and awards. In a speech to the Trades Unions' Annual Learning Services Conference in 2004, and more recently at the launch of 'unionlearn' in May 2006, Gordon Brown particularly recognised the importance of and made reference to the work of Learning Representatives in encouraging colleagues in to workplace learning. He encouraged the expansion of the numbers of learning representatives.
