| Unionlearn, the TUC and the North West Women's Tutor Group (NWWTG) organised their second women's conference and were hoping to make this year's event even more successful than last year. Women & Unions: Equality- What's next? takes place on Friday 14th November 2008 from 10am at the Mechanics Institute in Manchester. The purpose of the event is to help make workplaces fairer and equality aware. The day will include contributions from unionlearn* Director Liz Smith, guest speakers from the TUC National Equality Team and Employment Law specialists giving information and discussing equality in the workplace and society. The conference will look at issues such as the Single Equality Bill, employment flexibility for single parents, the role of the equality rep in the workplace and flexible working. TUC Course Co-ordinator at Stockport College Dianne Jones has helped organise this year's event and said: 'Through this conference we are celebrating the role women and trade unions have played in helping to address issues around equality throughout the North West and setting out the agenda on where women can have the biggest impact in the future. Raising awareness through learning can help address issues around fairness for women and it is the vehicle we can use to help overcome inequality both in the workplace and society.' Liz Smith, unionlearn Director, said: 'Women now make up the majority of trade union membership. They play a vital role in promoting equality so I am especially pleased to be attending Women & Unions: Equality- What's next? And it is particularly fitting for the conference to be held at the Mechanic's Institute, the birthplace of the TUC. The women at the conference today are predominantly union representatives. They are helping to make the workplace better and more equal and I am proud to see unionlearn giving this kind of support.' 300 words |
