Women and UnionsWomen trade unionists from across the North West recently gathered for a one day conference in Manchester. Organised by the TUC Education Women Tutors Group, the 'Women and Unions' Conference focused on the theme of 'Equality - what next?' The conference looked at issues such as the Single Equality Bill, employment flexibility for parents and the role of the equality rep in the workplace. The event proved to be a lively celebration of how women and trade unions not only strive to make workplaces fairer but also promote a forward thinking equality agenda. Unionlearn Director Liz Smith set the tone for the day as she reminded delegates that women now are the majority of union members and spoke enthusiastically about their continuing role in progressing equality issues.
Guest speakers from the TUC National Equality Team and Employment Law specialists spoke passionately about equality in the workplace and society. The delegates then had time to discuss the role of equality reps in the workplace and the changing nature of equality law. The day was a great success and everyone said not only was the event useful but also enjoyable with comments from the participants such as 'BIG THANK YOU to all of you. You make us all feel stronger being in the presence of such a fabulous group of dynamic, positive women. Well done for putting on a top event.' 'Great, interesting, learnt a lot but also a great social & networking event. A good mix of legal and applied info. Sally Brett especially was informative & engaging' Briefing document (300 words) issued 5 Dec 2008 |
