embargo: no embargo Facebook campaign saves trade union centre at Derby CollegeDerby College's Trade Union Education Centre opened this week, after a high-profile campaign saved it from closure at the eleventh hour. For the past 20 years, the centre has provided training for union learning reps, health and safety reps and union members in Derbyshire, Leicester, Northamptonshire and East Staffordshire. The news this summer that the centre was earmarked to be cut, led to David Croll, the college's principal, receiving hundreds of letters and emails praising the work of the centre's six staff. The campaign then gathered pace via Facebook. The centre is also important because its tutors work with union reps and employers to develop skills in the local workforce, by providing access to literacy and numeracy courses and a range of qualifications including NVQs*. Mary Alys, the TUC's unionlearn regional manager, said: 'This is a really positive move. It was vital that the East Midlands trade union movement rallied to give its support. However it will be important for Derby College to see that unions and workplace union reps make most of the excellent facilities there. If we don't use it, we are still in danger of losing it.'
