Equality and diversity

Equality and diversity

There is a huge gap between the educational haves and have-nots and TUC and union work seeks to bridge the gap and provide opportunities for those who have had least before, especially those with basic skills difficulties.

Some groups of workers have extra difficulty accessing learning through work - part time, shift workers, home workers and freelance workers for example. Others have jobs without a base or obvious focus for learning activity - construction workers, drivers, for example. Unions are looking at these groups and how to assist them.

As women workers overall are still poorly paid compared with men access to training - whether at basic or higher levels - can open doors for them. Similarly black and Asian workers are less likely to benefit from opportunities and gain promotion. Workers with disabilities are already disadvantaged in the workforce and difficulties associated with access to learning can make things worse. There are many workers for whom English is a second language.

The Tackling Racism: Online course has been designed to provide an opportunity for further understanding of equality and diversity issues in relation to race. It aims to provide a positive networking and learning experience and an opportunity to contribute to developing unions' interaction with lay members within the union and workforce.

TUC celebrates equality in the workplace
It is one year ago since the Employment Equality Age Regulations came into force with the goal of removing ‘age' barriers to work and progression in work. At the time, employers in the Northern region and the TUC gave a general welcome to the new regulations as a nudge in the right direction, a mechanism for enabling and encouraging employers to make the most of the talent in the labour pool in the region. As a small region with a declining and ageing indigenous population we really can't afford to exclude anyone from the labour market who is able and wants to work.

These are the headline findings of The Commission for Disabled Staff in Lifelong Learning - led by the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) - which launches its Interim Report today - Tuesday 18th September 2007 - at a conference in London.
