embargo: For immediate release Cumbria Unions step up for Union Friday On the 15th May (Union Friday) the local trade unions in Cumbria are organising a rally in Carlisle to encourage trade union members to use their vote in the Euro and local elections. The TUC are helping to host a rally between 12.30 and 13.30pm on Union Friday around the bandstand in Carlisle's city centre. Trade unions are concerned that voter apathy could lead to the election of far right parties who seek to counteract trade union policies and ideals. Deborah Hamilton, Branch Secretary for Cumbria County Unison said: 'Our branch has worked hard to achieve equality for all minority groups and for the women of Cumbria. To see the election of far right organisations would be abhorrent to us, we would like all of our members to use their vote wisely on June 4th.' Kevin Rowan, Northern TUC Regional Secretary said: 'These European elections are extremely important for workers and communities throughout the Northern region, perhaps especially in Cumbria. The European Parliament has been responsible for many positive developments for working people, especially regarding issues of equality and diversity. The people of Cumbria can help continue this progress by thoroughly rejecting the racist policies of the holocaust-denying far right parties.' All trade union members and lay representatives are welcome - and encouraged - to attend the rally if possible. - All TUC press releases can be found at www.tuc.org.uk - Register for the TUC's press extranet: a service exclusive to journalists wanting to access pre-embargo releases and reports from the TUC.
