Never too old to learn or never too young to Teach

Merseylearn, the unionlearn project within Merseytravel, have been holding a number of events as part of the Family Learning Festival throughout October and to support The Go-On Liverpool campaign.

One successful event was to get experts into one of the learning centres to show staff what 6 to 11 year olds can do safely online. Where better to get these experts, than to recruit three young Digital Champions.

Niamh Hunter, the 6 year old daughter of Union Learning Rep (ULR) and Merseylearn ICT* tutor, Norman Hunter, worked alongside 11 year old Edward Tripp and his 7 year old brother William, who is the nephews of Merseytravel's Head of Learning Stephanie Hague.

Displaying their skills, knowledge and confidence all three showed staff how to access educational games and websites used by most primary schools. CBBC, Moshimonsters, Facebook and YouTube were also demonstrated alongside Internet Safety Tips for Parents & Guardians.

Niamh's dad said:

'I got the idea when I was watching Niamh using a smart board at a parents evening, she is so confident and inquisitive. Children now use ICT from a very early age and access to the web for homework is becoming more and more essential and there are some great free skill building games available online, such as www.friv.co.uk.

Some parents and grandparents are still apprehensive to go online. Recent research indicates that around 9 million people in the UK have never used the internet and many of these are older people.

The confidence and digital skills shown by Edward, William and Niamh demonstrate that young people, particularly family members, can help older people get online - all they have to do is give an hour!'

All three young people have signed up as Digital Champions, and pledged to give an hour as part of the Race Online 2012 campaign, www.raceonline2012.org/giveanhour. Merseylearn staff and ULRs were on hand to provide information on basic computer courses through Go-On, low cost computer schemes and resources to support children with Literacy and Numeracy.

Young Digital Champion William summed up the day by saying: 'It was epic showing people all the cool stuff you can do on-line.'
