Local MP Dawn Butler joins the Mayor of Brent to open learning centre in Harlesden

Local MP Dawn Butler and Mayor of Brent, Councillor Harshadbhai Patel today (Thursday 1st May) opened a new union learning centre at the Grain d'Or bakery in Harlesden. The learning centre has been established by the BFAWU (Bakers and Allied Food Workers Union) and Grain d'Or with support from unionlearn*, the TUC's learning and skills organisation.

The learning centre, in partnership with the Workers Educational Association (WEA), will provide English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), English and Maths courses, to allow over 230 staff at the site to improve their skills in the workplace. It will also offer a range of IT courses to help anyone wishing to build improve their IT skills whether they are absolute beginners or have more advanced needs. A book swap scheme for staff will also be launched, with the aim of extending it to the local library.

Dawn Butler, MP for Brent South said: 'I am delighted to see that the partnership between Grain d'Or , the BFAWU and unionlearn is really benefiting my constituents here in Harlesden. I know it has taken a lot of hard work on all sides to establish the learning centre and it is clear that this centre and its learners will go from strength to strength. This is a great example of how unions and employers can work together to raise skills levels in the workplace.'

Ashish Mehta, Human Resources Manager at Grain d'Or said: 'Together with the union learning reps here onsite, Fletchers has been able to create a culture of learning, which benefits not only the company, but also our staff. This learning centre is a great achievement that reflects the hard work put in by the BFAWU and Fletchers, and the support received from unionlearn's Union Learning Fund*. It's great to welcome the Mayor and Dawn Butler MP to help us celebrate learning.'
