Trade unionists across the South West are celebrating Adult Learners' Week* by taking part in activities as diverse as tai chi, defensive driving and pyrotechnics. Workplaces throughout the region are hosting special events designed to encourage people to try something a bit different and learn something new. Warehouse workers in Swindon, who on Monday celebrated the opening of a learning centre, had the chance to brush up their driving techniques by spending 20 minutes on the road with an instructor, while transport workers in Salisbury spent their lunch break performing tai chi. Taster courses were particularly popular in the South West, with many workers trying their hand at IT studies, or at basic skills such as reading and writing. Other events are planned for later in the year, including a course in pyrotechnics in Torquay. Helen Cole, regional manager for unionlearn* in the South West, said: 'The scope and scale of these events shows just how important learning is to people at work. Union learning reps are creating fantastic opportunities for staff to return to learning and discover new talents. We know that when people have a taste of learning they want to continue and they gain more and more confidence. We also know that a skilled workforce also benefits employers and raises productivity.' The events are funded by unionlearn's Learning At Works Day Fund. Press release (300 words) issued 22 May 2008 |
