Local MP David Taylor sees skills crisis tackled, thanks to union learning at Kuehne and NagelDavid Taylor, local MP for North West Leicestershire, will visit local logistics firm Kuehne+Nagel at Bardon Hill near Coalville on Wednesday 30th July, to see how trade union-led learning is tackling the skills crisis. Trade union Unite has six union learning reps (ULRs) at the site, who with the support of unionlearn* (the TUC's learning and skills organisation) have helped the workforce to improve IT skills, literacy and numeracy. Local education provider Hinckley and North Warwickshire College delivers the courses and Kuehne+Nagel have supported staff by matching the time off spent on courses.
Also attending the visit will be Mary Alys, Regional Manager, unionlearn with the Midlands TUC, Peter Heighton, Regional Officer, Unite the Union, Peter Yarwood, Contract Director, Kuehne+Nagel. David will hold an open forum and hear from his own constituents about how they have benefited from the learning agreement between Unite and Kuehne+Nagel and how this partnership approach has worked extremely well. Around 600 people work on the site and all shift patterns are catered for. David Taylor MP said: 'I can see that the partnership between Unite and Kuehne+Nagel is really bringing benefits to staff and helping them to improve their skills. It's a great example of how to improve skills in the region and clearly a culture of learning has been developed in the workplace. Thanks to the dedication of Unite union learning reps and management support, staff here are embracing IT in a big way.' Mary Alys, Regional Manager , unionlearn with the Midlands TUC said: 'It's a pleasure to be able to show David Taylor the great work being done here at Kuehne+Nagel by Unite union learning reps. With the support of the company, and backed by a learning agreement, staff here are improving their skills, their life chances and their prospects. Working in partnership with Unite has brought many clear benefits to the company.'
