Laura Moffat MP sees union learning in action at Crawley Borough Council
Crawley MP Laura Moffat will see how her constituents are benefiting from union-led learning during a visit to Crawley Borough Council, where a range of learning activities are being held (Wednesday 1st October). Staff at the Council will be able to find out about a number of courses, take part on a learning survey, find out about the Open University and do taster courses in digital photography, DIY and other skills. The MP will meet union learning reps from UNISON, Unite, and the GMB trade unions and chat to learners. Her constituents are keen to tell her how they have improved their skills, thanks to union-led learning.
Representatives from the trade unions will highlight the achievements of union-led learning at Crawley Borough Council, which has been supported by unionlearn*, the TUC's learning and skills organisation. The learning event, sponsored by SEEDA (South East England Development Agency) is open to over a thousand staff at the site, with extra time being given by the Council for staff to attend.
Laura Moffat MP said: 'Crawley Borough Council plays an important role in the lives of my constituents and it is good to know that they value the staff, who provide so many services to the Borough. Investing in learning for Crawley Borough Council staff and working together with the trade unions is really paying off. Staff here are being encouraged and supported to return to learning and develop new skills, which is benefiting them, benefiting the Council, and the whole Borough of Crawley.'
Barry Francis, unionlearn Regional Manager, said: 'This is a great example of how trade unions, unionlearn and local councils are working together to improve individuals' skills. Crawley Borough Council has recognised the importance of making learning accessible for their staff and is reaping the benefits in all areas. Through our network of union learning reps, workers throughout the region are taking up courses, improving their skills and making real progress.'
