POA union learning conference gets a northern flavour

The POA union learn conference being held on 4th and 5th November will have a distinctly northern flavour this year, despite being held in Lincolnshire. The POA delegates from all over the country will be treated to a variety of keynote speeches from experts in the field of adult learning and unions, several of whom have northern roots.

Barney McGill, unionlearn* regional manager in the northern region will be giving his keynote speech on Wednesday 5th November, tying in with the overall theme of 'Unlocking Potential' and how unionlearn and the POA in the region have a well established, productive relationship with workplace learning projects running in several of the region's prisons: including HMP Holme House, HMP Acklington, HMP Frankland and HMP Haverigg in Cumbria.

There will also be a workshop run by Don Head, the lead Union Learning Rep(ULR) for the successful Bright Sparks project at Acklington and conference will be closed by Joe Simpson, POA National Executive Officer for the North East. The conference will also hear from Colin Moses, POA National Chairman, who originally hails from North Shields.

Joe Simpson, POA NEO said: ' I am over the moon that Barney has been asked - and is able -to speak at our conference because of the extremely strong links with the POA in the northern region. He, and unionlearn, have been big supporters of the learning agenda within the POA since the beginning and are invaluable partners.'

Barney McGill said: 'I am honoured to be asked to give a keynote speech at this conference, and even more so that the northern region is represented so well. There is a lot of hard work and dedication that goes into making workplace union learning projects deliver, and commitment from the union, activists and members is paramount. The POA are staunch supporters of the learning agenda which will enable their members to capitalise on any opportunities available to them to improve their skills. Long may their -deserved - success continue.'
