Stream: Learning through unions

Dartford MP Howard Stoate sees unions tackle learning

Dartford MP Dr Howard Stoate will see how union-led learning is raising skills in his constituency today (Friday 14th) when he attends a meeting for union learning reps and project workers from a range of trade unions. Supported by unionlearn*, the TUC's learning and skills organisation, the meeting will hear contributions from the Fire Brigades Union (FBU), Unite the Union, rail unions RMT, ASLEF and TSSA, as well as teachers' union, the NUT and civil service union PCS.

Fire fighters and teachers will join bus drivers and rail workers from Metroline, SE Trains and Arriva buses to discuss how union-led learning in organisations across Dartford, in partnership with employers, can improve skills in the area. Union learning reps, part of a network of over 20,000 throughout the country, will share their experiences with the MP to give him a practical insight into workplace learning and the benefits it brings to employees and employers.

Dr Howard Stoate, MP for Dartford said: 'Union learning reps do a tremendous job in Dartford, helping my constituents to access courses and gain new skills and boosting all sorts of different organisations and businesses in the area. By speaking to ULRs from the wide range of trade unions here at this meeting I will gain a valuable insight into how trade unions and employers are working together to create better life chances for my constituents and to raise skills levels here in Dartford.'

Barry Francis, Regional Manager, unionlearn with Southern and Eastern TUC said: 'Now is the time to invest in skills, so productive partnership between trade unions and employers to raise skills levels is essential. In the current economic climate, investment in skills is one thing employers can't afford to drop, if they want to be well-placed for recovery.'
