Advice for prospective SSC board members

It can be a daunting task to represent the trade unions on the board of a sector skills council, especially as you are likely to be the only person not there as an employer representative. Nevertheless it is vital that unions are represented at this level, and take the responsibilities of the role seriously, if only to ensure that we get the representation and respect we expect when seeking to work with the more operational parts of the SSC. These two factsheets have been drawn up to help officers prepare for this role, by checking out what relevant transferable skills they have, and presenting the 'top tips' of experienced trade union board members.
