Growing more than just Gardens at BBC Gardener's World Live

The horticultural heaven that is known as BBC Gardener's World Live will not only provide inspiring ideas for growing gardens, but also enable a group of talented youngsters to nurture and grow their current gardening skills to a world class level.

In the midst of all the buzz and excitement of the show, UK Skills, a not for profit organisation that champions skills and learning for work through competitions and awards, will be organising a competition and training exercise from 10 - 13 June. The WorldSkills UK Garden Design Final held on 10 and 11 June is organised by UK Skills in association with Reaseheath College, and will showcase garden design skills, including drawing and planning. During this time visitors can also try their hand at garden design by making their way to the CADD demonstrations booth.

At the same time, UK Skills will set a challenging training exercise over the four days of the show for four Squad UK members, who are the lucky competitors vying for a place at WorldSkills Calgary 2009 in September. The WorldSkills Competition is the biggest skills competition in the world and is held every two years. During this training exercise the four landscape gardeners will compete in pairs to build and display for the first time the garden that will be showcased at WorldSkills Calgary 2009.

The competitors will be under the watchful eye of Harry Turner, Training Manager for Landscape Gardening, who has been involved with WorldSkills Competitions since 2005. Askham Bryan College is the UK's WorldSkills Training Academy for land-based industries and is headed up by Harry Turner. Harry believes that his current squad members are 'enthusiastic, motivated and focused'. The independent education foundation Edge is the official supporter of Squad UK and Team UK.

Commenting on the activities planned for BBC Gardener's World Live, Simon Bartley, Chief Executive of UK Skills said: 'This is a great environment for both the WorldSkills UK Garden Design Final and Squad UK members to be inspired to produce amazing work, with the ultimate goal of growing their skills to a level which is world class. This is of particular importance as we build momentum for WorldSkills London 2011 which will put the spotlight on the UK and give us the opportunity to show other nations that we are still among the world's most skilled people'.

The UK's WorldSkills team is managed by UK Skills working in partnership with the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills, the Department for Employment and Learning Northern Ireland, the Scottish Government, the Welsh Assembly Government and key partners from education, government and industry.

Brathay provide and support the training and development of Squad and Team UK.
