'The Learning Revolution' Open Spaces Movement

On 23 March 2009 the Government launched a White Paper 'The Learning Revolution' setting out its policy on Informal Adult Learning (IAL). See link below to download a copy of Learning Revolution.

In 'The Learning Revolution' White Paper, BIS launched its 'Open Space 'Movement with the aim of opening up 7000 free or low cost learning spaces for self organised learning. BIS also acknowledged unionlearn*, particularly through the agency of its ULRs, as an important potential delivery partner for Informal Adult Learning and assisting in their aim of reaching their target of 7000 open spaces.

What kind of spaces can be included?

Any kind of space for learning that is open occasionally or regularly to a group or groups from outside your organisation. This could include anything from a trade union/workplace meeting room , education facilities, trade union leaning centre, resource centre, library, fire station, football ground, religious meeting place, community centre - in short, the possibilities are endless. Every physical space counts.

Unionlearn would be particularly interested in identifying trade union learning centres open to wider community use, including self-organised learning.

What is a 'self organised 'learning group?

A group of people who get together of their own volition to form a group or club, unfunded by the public purse, to pursue informal adult learning. Examples of self - organised groups include: learning clubs, history groups, reading groups, support groups, language groups, keep fit groups and lots more...
