Redundancy and Financial AssistanceWorkshop 22nd July, Workington RPA The Rural Payments Agency (RPA) in Workington held a redundancy and financial assistance workshop for fixed term contract support staff affected by cuts.
The event was designed to highlight the diligent work the PCS union is doing to support members during difficult times. Guidance was provided to those who attended, on a wide range of issues, including;
Casual drop-in sessions were arranged from 9am-12pm by the following organisations:
With announcements of redundancies only made in one area at the RPA, it was heartening to see over half of the fixed term appointees attend the event and take advantage of the advice, support and guidance on offer. Adrian Firth from CFEB said: 'I thought that the event was very well organised with a wide variety of organisations all working together to help those affected. The people that I met from both the organisations providing services and the staff themselves were all friendly and genuinely interested in the help that was on offer. I think that the number of people attending the event was excellent and the opportunity for us to deliver one to one help and guidance with finance was brilliant, particularly having the facilities and meeting rooms to speak with people in a confidence setting was a real bonus. The day was planned well and delivered with a passion to help those affected'. The feedback from the workshop and session was very positive, which included the following:
'I found the support useful and put my name down for the a course with Trades Hall, they were very helpful with my CV etc. I also attended the presentation on money management in the afternoon and I have also started to save money due to the advice I was given. The redundancy booklet from CFEB has a great deal of useful information in it.' 'The job centre and trades hall was very helpful' Support and guidance for those staff dealing will potential redundancies will be ongoing thanks to the support and commitment of those involved in organising and participating in the event. Ken Gyles, Unionlearn's Skills Recession & Recovery Development Worker said: 'It is so vital that unions gain knowledge and build contacts with services that can support members in these difficult times. Bringing the services into the workplace helps to engage those at threat of facing redundancy and provides an opportunity for them to look at their particular skills and employability prospects. The role of CFEB in offering financial advice is a practical worthwhile service especially when the financial situations of staff are changing on a daily bases.'
