AEGON - Right to Request Time to Train case studyAEGON are a forward thinking financial services organisation that demonstrates exemplary policies on workplace learning. Prior to the introduction of the Right to Request Time to Train, the employer was already working in partnership with UNITE to provide Skills for Life* training and had supported requests for time off for further and higher education through its flexible working procedures. Following the implementation of the Right to Request Time to Train, AEGON in consultation with UNITE developed a 'Time to Train' policy which included the development of a form that fulfilled all the requirements of the legislation and complied with their in house criteria. Union representatives have currently supported a member through the Right to Request Time to Train procedures. The request for compressed hours in order to accommodate part time study for a degree in psychology was initially turned down for operational reasons. However after further discussions agreement was reached with the management who were otherwise pleased to support the development of a valued member of staff. It is anticipated that there will be other requests for time off to train at AEGON in the future and that there will be operational challenges in meeting the requests of workers who want new learning opportunities. However, both AEGON and UNITE are committed to facilitating agreements to support learning where possible. Case studies and projects (300 words) issued 24 Aug 2010 |
