Unionlearn director congratulates CWU on mainstreaming union learningUnionlearn director Liz Smith congratulated the Communication Workers Union on agreeing a number of important new policy and rule changes that will bring union learning into the mainstream of the union's structures and democratic processes at their Annual Conference in Bournemouth this week. Policies which fully incorporate the role of union learning representative (ULR) into the CWU Branch and Regional structure were passed by the conference and were a strong sign of the growing recognition of the importance of union learning to CWU members and of the way it can enhance the ability of unions to organise and recruit in the workplace. These changes mean that the role of ULR* is now enshrined in the CWU rule book and that ULRs will have their own properly constituted Regional structure through the formation of Regional Learning Committees, which will be responsible for driving and delivering CWU learning strategies locally. Unionlearn director Liz Smith said: 'Unionlearn congratulates the CWU on this fantastic achievement and recognition of the importance of the role of union learning reps. Through the union's commitment and dedication, thousands of people have been able to change their lives through learning." CWU Head of Education and Training Trish Lavelle welcomed these important advances for the union, commenting that: 'The CWU has now opened 103 learning Centres across the UK and has approximately 1000 ULRs. Union Learning is an important part of the 'CWU offer' and is helping us engage with literally thousands of our members and potential members every year in a really positive way. Most of all though, this recognises that ULRs are here to stay and gives them parity with other representatives. And it is a great testament to the superb work going on in BT, Royal Mail, Parcelforce, O2 and Fujitsu workplaces up and down the country by our hard working ULRs.'
