Partnership supports client centred advice on learning and work

Nextstep* Black Country is working in partnership with the GMB Union and their Walsall branch's 'Union Learning Rep', and 'Walsall College of Continuing Education' in supporting Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council's commitment to 'GO' which was recently launched to support employers help their employees develop Skills for Life*.

After Walsall MBC signed up to 'GO', their 'Highways' management and Union Learning Rep were quick to recognise the potential benefits for their team's participation. Advisers have been able to meet individual employees and help them to identify their development needs for literacy and numeracy along with other learning opportunities and vocational progression routes.

With the help of trained ULRs they have helped employees look at a wide range of opportunities.

'Interests and enquiries have ranged from how to improve their basic skills in literacy and numeracy, gain Highway Maintenance level 3 qualifications, training in electrical installation and plastering. One employee is interested in entering the music industry and I have arranged for them to get work experience at a local radio station'.

Anne-Marie Hanna of GMB - West Midlands 'Your Learning - Your Union' said, 'Through our regional 'unionlearn' project, we are proud to be supporting and promoting learning opportunities for all within the Authority. We are seeing a positive 'joined up' approach by all organisations involved in meeting the learning needs of employees.

Comment from participants in the programme said... 'It's great that we are getting something for us as individuals'.... 'It's feels that our hard work is being appreciated to be getting something back for our hard work'... 'This type of support is normally job associated but this supports us out of work too'.
