Variety is the Spice of Life - long learningTrade unions in the Midlands got a boost this week with 114 innovative events successfully securing funding from unionlearn* Midlands region & the Campaign for Learning*, for workplace events on Learning at Work Day and during Adult Learners' week. This funding was used to boost and promote new events in the region, and below is just a flavour of the wide range of the activities: 'Costa Corby'Corus Tubes in Corby, Northamptonshire, in conjunction with Community union, had a Spanish themed Learning at Work Day with activities including serving Spanish themed food in the canteen for the day and encouraging the staff to order their food in Spanish. With a tutor on site to assist staff to use the correct pronunciation when ordering, and the themed day was tailored as if the staff were on holiday in Spain and having to function in this unfamiliar environment. The day was promoted with posters and fliers throughout the site. There was also a mini quiz available where the staff were able to test their knowledge of the language, and completing the quiz gained them entry into a prize draw. The funding secured for Learning at Work Day will also help with the purchase of a number of Spanish for beginners language books to be used in the learning centre and will form part of their planned library. There will also be materials from the local college including information on Skills for Life*, BBC RaW materials and access to Quick Reads*.
