Stream: Learning through unions

Seconds out for learning!

Herol 'Bomber' Graham the former British and European and boxing champion launched a ULR* recruitment day for union members working for Sheffield City Council and Sheffield Homes. Project workers from GMB, Unison and Unite were on hand to explain the ULR role and sign people up for courses. Over thirty union members from all three unions turned up to hear the presentations and ask questions.

At the end of the event, there were already enough volunteers to run two ULR courses through Sheffield TU Education centre. Herol told the meeting that although he did well at school, his boxing career became his main focus for many years. He volunteered to be the first learner the for project by requesting his union, GMB, to signpost him to a Sports Science course.

Unionlearn Regional Manager, Dr Alan Roe, said 'GMB, Unison and Unite are working in partnership with both employers to recruit and train ULRs and identify learning needs. All parties clearly see the benefits of working together in this positive way.'

The unions have organised a learning bus to visit 14 workplaces across the city during November to tell staff about the project.
