Save our maritime skillsMaritime unions RMT and Nautilus are running a campaign calling upon the Government to provide long-awaited support for the training and employment of UK seafarers. Britain is an island nation which relies on ships and seafarers for more than 90 per cent of imports and exports, but the maintenance of maritime expertise is in danger - particularly given the recent announcement of plans for major redundancies by one of the largest employers. Two years ago maritime unions and shipowners presented the government with a joint package of proposals on seafarer training, and a new package was tabled this year, but a decision is still awaited. Enclosed is a postcard which members are encouraged to send to their local MP. There is also a Downing Street E-Petition, and this is displayed on the front page of the Nautilus website along with an e-postcard to MPs www.nautilusint.org. Congress passed a resolution this year supporting the campaign and the TUC urges unions to raise awareness of the campaign amongst members and to support the campaign.
