Mid-life career reviews helping workers plan their future

Fancy a life change? Many people do in their forties or fifties. At a time when most people will be working longer and so need more lifelong learning, this issue is rapidly rising up the skills agenda. However, there are often practical problems, not just about skills. Unionlearn, funded by BIS, was a partner in the Mid-life Career Review Project which aimed to develop and test different models of working with people to review their plans for life and career. The reviews give individuals the opportunity to take stock, review their options and plan their future.

Citizen Maths takes first steps - registration now open

Registration for the free open online maths course, Citizen Maths, is now open. Unionlearn is working in partnership with Citizen Maths to explore a different way of learning maths.

Employers predict crisis - Britain needs a skills rise

New research published on Wednesday by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES) shows that 43% of employers believe a skills crisis could happen in the next 12 months. According to research by the Prince's Trust and HSBC, 73% of employers think a significant skills crisis could hit the UK in the next three years, while 13% said they already have a significant skills crisis.

South West reps course booklet for 2014/15 out now

The new South West union reps course booklet for 2014/15 has been released. Includes all currently scheduled course dates through to July 2015 across the region.

More courses may be added throughout the year – to receive regular email updates for union reps from South West TUC Education contact and ask to be added to the mailing list.

TUC Education courses now offered in Paisley, Renfrewshire

TUC Education in Scotland has established a new agreement with 'West College Scotland' to deliver TUC Education courses at the Paisley Campus. From September 2014, Union Reps will no longer have to travel into Glasgow City Centre to access TUC Education courses. 

West College Scotland's Paisley Campus is only a short distance from Paisley town centre, with regular bus and train services serving the town and college.

Unionlearn annual report shows increasing numbers of ULRs

Unionlearn has released its annual report for 2013-14. The report shows an increase in the number of union learning reps (ULRs) and the union learning fund (ULF) performing well ahead of expectations.
