embargo: none Apprenticeships* are Union Business The 30th October marks the launch of the Apprenticeships are Union Business initiative supported by unionlearn (the TUC's learning and skills organisation.) The event is being attended by over 100 delegates at the Holiday Inn, Liverpool City Centre. Speakers will include unionlearn Regional Manager, Dave Eva, Louise Ellman MP for Liverpool, Riverside and Jack Stopforth, Chief Executive of Liverpool Chamber of Commerce. Unionlearn is launching the initiative to offer training to all union learning representatives (ULRs) and other union representatives in mentoring apprentices so that full support can be offered to them in the workplace. This event is one of a series of nationwide seminars that will help share information and good practice in this key area. Unions should be at the forefront of developing and extending Apprenticeships across sectors. Union reps are uniquely placed to promote Apprenticeship programmes and support apprentices. In turn, apprentices will experience the positive role that unions play in today's workplaces. Unionlearn Regional Manager and Chair of the event, Dave Eva, said : 'Today's apprentices will play a crucial role in the future of our economy. Unions are working with employers to increase the number of apprenticeship starts. The Government must continue to lead by example by offering more apprenticeships in the public sector and initiatives such as this being launched in Liverpool can make a real difference to employers and apprentices in the workplace.' Unionlearn Union Development Co-ordinaor, Tony Saunders , added: 'We are really pleased that so many have made the effort to contribute to the launch of our regional initiative. It shows the importance that trade unions, employers and Government alike are attaching to the role of apprenticeships in the workplace. We are determined to build on the work we have already undertaken in the region and will provide training and materials to ULRs and other union reps to support and improve the offer for apprentices.' 315 words NOTES TO EDITORS: All unionlearn press releases can be found at www.unionlearn.org.uk Media enquiries: Press release (400 words) issued 30 Oct 2009 |
